Photo Observation- Surreal

2) Attribute the Photo, tell us where it came from.

This is a photo I saw in a Tik Tok about places in your dreams.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION:

In my dream I often go no where, run around in circles with no place to go. The light is unnaturally even. No shadows or highlights. Just bright white light from every direction. The white light. A subject of human consideration. Running around, seeking the natural in a world created in my head.

Photo Observation

Attributes: This photo was taken from the Meow Wolf’s photo gallery on their website. This is one of their rooms at the Meow Wolf museum

Theme: Surreal

Description: You walk into the first room only seeing a basic house with regular dim lights, keeping your expectations at mellow. But then you walk through a fridge and suddenly walk into a room that makes you feel like you are in the movie avatar. Everything seems alive. You can see the regular structure of an outdoor treehouse, but then there are lit-up moss, plants, and obscure things that feel like they are breathing. The colors and emphasis of the lights create this movement, seeming like the things around you are real and alive. Everything lit and shown puts you in a euphoric experience.

Photo Observation 9

This photo was taken by me in Times Square at 12:37pm on May14th, 2020

Theme: Surreal

This one of the most surreal photos I’ve ever taken as I personally feel it’s an accurate representation of the pandemic shutdown. This picture was taken when me and my brothers went to the city last may to see everything and it was a desolate wasteland. We saw probably less than 20 people around Midtown that day, and we stopped at Times Square and saw that every store had been closed until further notice.

Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: Photo is of a Banksy art installment posted to Banksy’s Instagram.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The word “surreal” creates a feeling of dream-like unreality. To me, surreal means extremely bizarre and not logical. I chose this Banksy art piece because of the absurdity going on and the odd, dream-like lighting. The lighting reminds me of the weird, slightly uncomfortable lighting you run into when you are having a strange dream. It reminds me a lot of the mythical “back rooms” that many people have dreams about. The rats represent a surreal fear that many have that is then reflected into their dreams.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/21/2021 – 11:30 am – pathway of Breslin Hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun just came back out after a rain shower and was reflecting off of the puddles and peering through the dewy leaves of the trees outside of Breslin Hall.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The relief felt as I pulled my hoodie down on this chilly, rainy day woke me up as I exited a particularly bland lecture. Excited for a new day as the sunlight reflected off of the puddles on the ground and warmed my skin, I felt refreshed as I walked to my car, saddened that I would have to stay in and work the rest of the day at a desk.

Photo Observation- Surreal

1)

2) Jee Young Lee (Untouched – Unedited Surreal Photography by Jee Young Lee – Pondly)

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The lighting through the window is trapped inside the confines of the glass’ shape, rather than dispersing through the room, representing the dream state and being trapped in your mind, no matter what is going on around you. The top half of the room is impossibly lit diagonally from the window, creating a dream-like effect in which only half of the room may wake the model.

Lighting Observation

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday April 21st at 11:36 am

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My housemate eating breakfast across from me at the table

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The living room was dark, only the window illuminated the table. Her breakfast burrito was surrounded by the soft white emitted from the cloudy day. I should have made one for myself, the light was calling me.

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTION: Taken by me at my house in SF, September 9, 2020, 8:18 AM
  2. THEME: Surreal
  3. DESCRIPTION: I wake up to find myself surrounded by darkness, as if it is the middle of the night or too early to be awake. The harsh white light from my phone shows that it is actually 8 in the morning. I get up and look outside my dining room window to see the apocalypse. A blanket of smoke covers the city, blocking the sun’s rainbow of light. The world is made up of flames and yet there is only black.

Light lab

Fall Sunset in Vermont

Lighting Instruments:

SL boom 36 degree four/ ETC 436 coral amber

SR boom 36 degree four/ ETC 436 coral amber

Cyc/  R15 yellow

Cyc/ R27 Red

6” fresnel

Gobo Leaves full/ R94 kelly green/ 36 degree source four ETC 436

I created a sunset color with a mixture of burnt orange and red while adding an amber tone to the sides to resemble the finally setting. I added dark green leaves at the gobo to add the Vermont texture of nature.

Easter sunrise in a gothic cathedral

Lighting Instruments:

Cycs: R15, R27, R80

FOH 2/ 26 degree source four/ ETC 426/ Color R47

Side: SL 36 degree source four/ ETC 436/ Gobo Budding Branches

For this picture, purple and yellow are the two main colors that pop in my head as easter. I wanted a pastel yellow to show the innocence of the morning with the juxtaposition of the medium light purple that fits with the gothic cathedral texture gobo.

Noon on a hot summer day at the Caribbean

Lighting Instruments:

Cyc: R126,R27,R80,R15

6” Fresnel/ color R14- medium straw

36 degree source four ETC 436/ SL/ gobo  Wild palms

SR par 64mfl/ GE FFR

36 degree source four ETC 436/ SL/ gobo  foliage jungle

I used tints of green for the yellow base of lights. I kept thinking of the jungle or green leaves for the Caribbean with a light summer flow from the yellow sun. The model is leaping, because they are happy with leaping around in the sand. I also added a straw like color for the floor to give off the impression of a sand color.

Winter afternoon just before the snow

Lighting Instruments:

cyc R80

FOH 1 and 2 SR and SL 26 degree source four/ ETC 426 /Zephyr blue R84

6” Fresnel/ color G845 Cobalt

SR side light 36 degree source four / ETC 436/ Gobo snowflake six

I wanted to keep this simple with a blue monochrome idea. I imagine before a snowstorm or just for the snow falling, the atmosphere to be a dark blue. There are different angles of blue and values of blue in this lab, and it is supposed to arise the idea of a cold front.
