Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTION: Photo taken by me from my house in San Francisco; September 29, 2015
  2. THEME: Sunrise/Sunset
  3. DESCRIPTION: A sliver of the sun remains over the ocean as night swiftly approaches. Its light warms the sky by washing the clouds with a vibrant pink that reminds you of summertime. Fall is San Francisco’s summer, after all. The gradient from yellow to orange to pink to indigo gives you a gorgeous rainbow that feels complete without the “missing” colors.

Photo Observation

2) This photo was taken by Micaela Erickson

3) THEME: Sunrise/Sunset

4) DESCRIPTION: The snow sits upon the trees illuminated by the last light of day. The sun still shines bright, its light peeking through the trees even as the light fades into night. Blues, pinks, oranges, and yellows mingle together, their pastel gradient gives a sense of peace and calmness. Everything is quiet yet so bright. Sunsets in the snow leave a subtle smile on those around.

Lighting Observation

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 2/10/2021 – 2:51 – My kitchen window in Uniondale, NY

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I am standing in my kitchen cleaning the dishes when I look out my window. Bright, white snow is blanketing the ground, perfectly untouched except for the small pawprints of animals. Although bright, the light cannot reach inside of the molded snow. Wispy, stringy clouds diffuse the sunlight as it filters through the leaves of a tree, turning it pastel. A long, skinny shadow flows out of the pine tree.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This moment evoked curiosity within me. I can only assume that those prints are from little critters, but I wouldn’t know a raccoon print from a squirrel print. There is discomfort that comes with not knowing what is so close to the place you sleep. Can it get in? In addition, the sun can’t quite reach in the holes of the prints, darkening them and adding to the mystery. Curiosity also comes from how the sunlight leaks through the clouds and trees to reflect off the snow and light our world in a candied yellow. Its brightness is aweing.

Photo Assignment (Sunrise/Sunset)

1) Photo was taken by me. It is the sunset on a bay in Cape May, NJ

2) THEME: Sunset/Sunrise

3) DESCRIPTION: The sun glistens over the horizon, peeking through flat clouds, wishing a good night to the creatures that live below and kissing the still water as a good morning to the nocturnal beauties arising. Shading the path in the grass, it gates the bay in safety, keeping strangers out with its coming darkness. The light still remaining ripples down the center of the water– a sparkling path to the land. Its amber beam splits the bay, radiating a salmon glow that gradates into a purplish-blue. The lavender and blushing streaks of sky will soon make way for black as the setting sun says its last goodbyes.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/9/2020 at 9:15 pm HofUSA

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Lighting of a seating area

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:

The glowing bubbles above the heads of students cast a soft amber hue across the room. The glare reflects up from the glazed dark wooden floors. Bodies cast soft shadows among the dark auburn leather seats. The dark corners of the room are left dim from the yellow-ish hue that glosses the room.

Lighting Moment Observation

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 2/5/21 / 3:57 PM / Mall Parking Lot

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light on the snow casting shadows.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The white snow pure except for the gravel, gasoline and other gross resources brought to you by humans. The mound leering over my car as I pull up closer and closer to it. Imperfectness plagues this snow heap as we see in the disturbed surface. Indents and objects casting a hazy filter of blue over those places the sun can’t quite reach. I sit there for a moment, amazed at the beauty and confused by the question: Is it soft or hard? The world may never know as I drive off, still thinking of that forbidden snow cone.

Lighting Observation

Feb. 5th, 2021 5:20 pm.

The crystal salt lamp glows in my bedroom window. It makes the white curtains shine orange against the dark blue sky in the window. The lamp is not strong enough to light an entire room, nor an entire corner. But anything within a 4 foot radius has a highlighted creamsicle hue. It provides warmth and comfort to the harsher colors in my room.

Light Lab

WINTER IN NORTH DAKOTA:
When I think of winter, I immediately picture a cold icy winter night. North Dakota’s mountainous landscape brings gives me a sense of chill and brisk air while gazing at the rolling hills under the moonlight. I used (359 medium violet) for the backlight to create a cold moonlight/midnight feeling, (47 light rose purple) to create a dramatic and eerie feeling as one often gets when the air is cold, and lastly, (66 cool blue) to bring that icy feeling of winter into the lighting.
NOON IN SUMMER:
Noon is the brightest time of day, with the light pretty much directly overhead. When thinking of summer I feel the warm glow of the sun, and picture the vibrant colors of sherbet dripping from a child’s hand amongst the hot chalk dressed sidewalk. For the backlight I used (34 flesh pink) to create a bright atmosphere, (20 medium amber) to give the stage the feel of an afternoon sun, and lastly, (312 Canary) for a more vibrant sunlight and summer glow.
FALL IN VERMONT:
Fall is my favorite season, as it gives me the calm and cozy feeling of warmth and peace. When imagining the lighting of fall, I wanted to capture the colors of the changing leaves, along with the feeling of running through a pumpkin patch. For the backlight I used (22 Deep amber) to give a campfire like warmth because who doesn’t want a s’more on a chilly autumn evening, (95 medium green) to capture the colors of the changing fall foliage, and (15 deep straw) to provide the sense of a warm golden glow.
SPRING SUNRISE IN A CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL:
When thinking about a nice spring Sunday mass, I am inspired by the colors of the sun pouring through the stain glass windows, and the freshly bloomed flowers surround the alter. For the backlight I used (349 fuchsia) as an accent color to represent the pink of spring, and reds tones used for many catholic reasons, (313 light relief yellow) to portray the golden sun beams shinning through the windows, and lastly (377 Iris purple) for the sense of cool colors of the stain glass peaking into the pews.
