Photo Observation

Untitled document

  1. Source: I found this through a google search
  2. Theme: Single Artificial Light Source
  3. I chose this image because my go-to thought with this assignment was a side light or a frontal light so I wanted to do something different. I like this one in particular because the back light is so barely apparent that there is just a white line of light around the subject’s head. I think the relation of source to subject in this picture is really interesting and not something that is seen very often. I also like the slight color on the hair because it normally wouldn’t be seen but because there is such an absence of color in the rest of the picture, the color there is more apparent.

Lighting Observation

Date: 03/10/2022

Time: 5:25pm

Location: In and Out in Dallas, Texas

Objective Description: The sunlight hits the palm trees in front of the restaurant and the sign of the restaurant.

Subjective Description: The light hit the large yellow sign at just the right angle where there were little to no shadows. This created an interesting effect where the sign was perfectly lit but there were no shadows that would make the sign and the building seem more real. It reminded me of a badly rendered video game that didn’t take into account how shading works. This also created an eerie and otherworldly feeling as shadows are usually what show that the light is real so the absence made it feel like something was wrong and I wasn’t in this world.

Lighting Observation #5

Date / Time / Location: March 11 at 10:50,  vaguely the horizon line

Objective Description: a lot of orange-tinted lights that sit right up next to the horizon line

Subjective Description: The orange lights sit right up next to the horizon line. They’re really the last things you can see before the world fades black in the night. Because of the distance, the lights seem to flicker and change, looking like tiny candles across the scene. They are regularly distanced across the view, so it’s likely they’re part of a parking lot or something, but the orange color is more comforting and warm than is typical

Lighting Observation #5

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : March 11, 2022 at 10:20, Hallway into the Bathroom

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The hallway is all dark, save for the light coming from the bathroom. The door is mostly closed, so the light is condensed to a sliver, highlighting the space around the door.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The limited light creates a frame for the door that enhances the shape and creates an aura of mystery. The sliver of light in contrast to the looming darkness develops a feeling of hope amidst great adversary. The limited light also draws the eye more impactful than an abundance of light because the eye is searching for something to focus on.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: March 10th / 9:35 pm / Hempstead Turnpike
  2. Objective Description: As I walked home from rehearsal the sky was a dark pitch, black but the moon illuminated the sky rather well. Even though it was quite dark outside, the moonlight in coalition with the streetlights provided a safe pathway home. The neighborhood streets were not very bright, however the turnpike as well as front street were bright enough to see the cement ahead of you.
  3. Subjective Description: The moonlight was very comforting to walk home with. The streetlights among hempstead are rather scattered and dimly lit, so it was nice to have another bright light present. In addition, the beaming crescent moon looked gorgeous in comparison to the bland, black night sky.

Lighting Observation

  1. Thursday 3/10 9:45pm LH Comm Dance Studio
  2. The dance studio has bright fluorescent lights that contrast the, now dark, windows. It’s striking to me how the room had no feeling in contrast to all the different types of dancing I had done in there throughout the day.
  3. The studio is darker than it was at 9:40am. The tall mirrors reflect the stark artificial fluorescent light throughout the space and the ceilings seem to tower over the large cast of dancers. It brought me a sort of deja vu feeling. Maybe it was the exhaustion but the feeling of the fluorescent lights evoked a sense of repetition and cyclical nature. I could picture a Groundhog Day like scene happening in front of me.

Lighting Observation #5

3/11/2022 – 9:20am – Dorm Room

Objective – There is one small window that sits on the opposite wall as the door. The window is directly across from a closet and is between two beds that lie next to opposing walls. The window has a closed blind that is twisted slightly open, allowing sunlight only through the cracks in the blind.

Subjective – I quietly opened the door to my room and took one gentle step in before noticing the subtle sunlight shining through the small window. Cascading ribbons of light made almost a direct path to my feet as if I could walk on this yellow brick road. The only other light in the room was a single blue dot blinking sporadically on the ceiling, it belongs to the box that allows for our electronics to connect to the wifi. I took only a moment to admire the small rays of light in my room before continuing with my mundane task.

Lighting Observation #5

  1. Thursday, March 10th. Around 9:00pm at the corner of Stuyvesant looking across Oak street to the Netherlands.
  2. There were white street lamps contrasting the amber light coming from the lamps attached to the outside of the Netherlands Core, along with a haze in the air.
  3. As I was looking out across the street, I noticed how the beams of light were shining through the night sky. Because there was an odd haze in the air it caused the lights to shine almost like a four-legged star or a plus sign. This was already a striking shape, until I noticed how the white light made the shape sharper and the amber light across the street had a softer and almost more welcoming shape to it. I was already planning on crossing the street, but it was a pleasant feeling to be walking away from the harsh white light and towards the warm amber light.

Lighting Observation

Date: 03/10/2022

Time: 12:45 AM

Location: Cove between Constitution and Vanderpohl Halls

Objective Description: Lamp post shining through the branches of a tree outside of VP.

Subjective Description: Walking down the steps heading back to my dorm I noticed first the brightness of the white light beaming, then the abrasive shadows stopping the light caused by each twig and leaf poking out of the branches of the tree. The pure white light against the darkness of the night elicits intriguing emotions, and made me think about that moment until I was back in my room.

4) DESCRIPTION: The person in the photo’s focus is backlit by a light source invisible to the viewer. Beams of light cut through the haze that adds an eerie feeling to the image. The light is bright white, leaving the figure colorless, just a shadow.
