02/09 Light Observation
02/09/2024
While walking past Emily Lowe Hall just after sundown there was a street light shining brightly against bare tree branches.
The light was cast on only some of the branches, leaving the surrounding branches and trees in shadow and darkness. The lit branches casts shadows in different directions, in thin and unique shapes around it.
Romance Photo Theme
I found this photo on Pinterest and I really liked the way the light in the background doesn’t take over, but allows for the silhouette of both people to be very nicely emphasized. The shape of the window allows for a very specific area of focus, while still allowing for the overall scene to support the elegance and warmth of the scene.
2/15 Photo Observation
I chose this photo of mine for “romance” because it is a very special moment for me and my boyfriend. We had just finally seen each other after a trip I went on to Las Vegas. I love this photo because it is lit by the moon and reflections surrounding us, and even though you can’t see our faces, we are so happy. This was taken by my friend Juliana Amato, on my phone.

The way the lights are draped from the tree creates beautiful natural variation causing the lights to have a kind of starry effect. I think the color of the lights is also nice and perfect for romance. They have a bright yellowy glow and with the dark of night all around they feel soft and pretty. They are a lovely combo of spectacle, beauty, and simplicity perfect for a summer night date.

While there are no actual people in this photo, from the lighting alone you can tell that this dinner is a romantic occasion. The dim lighting and red sign lights are classic lighting choices used in romantic settings. The red color represents the feeling of love and romance, and the dim lighting shut outs the background of an environment and focuses just on the scene in the light. This makes romantic pictures and settings feel much more intimate.
Romance Photo
This was taken on January 14th on 9th Avenue in Manhattan. While there isn’t necessarily a couple shown in the photo, there is something very romantic about creating a more intimate setting in a bigger, more hectic one. The string of white lights create an intimate and romantic feel that makes this part of Manhattan seem like a quieter and special place. The way the lights hang from the trees create movement with light, and make it feel romantic.
Lighting Observation 2/16
Date: 2/13/24 2:00pm
Location: Regal Cinemas
Objective: The Opening titles are lined with green and magenta on opposite sides. This, I realised thanks to references in last week’s lecture to 3d, gives them the illusion of dimensionality against the flat screen due to the function of our eyes.
Subjective: Bright white fonts blast off of the screen towards me. Their neon glow further calls for my attention. I cannot look away as they continue to approach

I paid attention to your request that the subject is not inherentlty romantic, but that the lighting is. I thought back to moments in which I felt that the atmosphere was inherently romantic, and recalled the few times that I’ve been able to look out over a city. This feeling of separation from the environment is compounded by the ambient glow of the space. The slight mist creates a dome over the lights and scatters them in all angles. It brings a colective-ness which is not often felt in tbe modern age. Its not straight forward, but it does feel romantic.

The soft light from the sun brightens up the brick wall, contrasting the dark shadows as our focus subject. In their actions, the shadows show a little intimate connection between each other. This captures a perfect moment of love and innocence for the viewer, even though we only have small details what the two lovers look like.
