Photo Observation

1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine_marketing

2) THEME: Advertisement/Desire

3) DESCRIPTION: This is a 1999 advertisement for Virginia Slims, a brand of cigarette. The photo is very chic and stylized, making it nearly impossible to tell that it is an advert for cigarettes unless you are already familiar with the brand. The light is concentrated on the model’s face and neck, bringing attention to her lips and the “cigarette holding” stance of her fingers. The way in which the lighting aesthetically compliments and highlights the model’s complexion is breathtaking; almost makes you want to pick up a cigarette.

Lighting Observation

1: DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 3/3/2020, 2:45am, in my bedroom off campus

2: OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I left the TV on when I fell asleep and I woke up in the middle of the night to bright lights and loud noise.

3: SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I had forgotten to turn my TV off before I fell asleep. I had such a long day and I went to sleep pretty early. I wasn’t surprised that I woke up in the middle of the night because I got so much sleep already.

Light Observation

1: DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 3/3/2020, 12:45, behind the Adams Playhouse

2: OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight and reflections in a puddle as I walk by.

3: SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I stride over a deep puddle of rainwater caught on the gray cement, for a brief moment I see a crystal clear image of the bottom of my shoe, the sky, the clouds, and the sun before I step into the puddle and ruin the image. It reminded me of how fragile little moments like these are.

Lighting Observation #6

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: I had my lighting moment sitting in this class on Wednesday March 5th.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was sitting at my desk taking notes for this class when I noticed the sun peering through the window starting to reflect ofd of my silver pen, swirling around my paper and the room as I wrote.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The simple act of taking notes is suddenly interrupted as the sun beams towards the pen in your hand, turning it into a mini disco ball. Distracted by the glow and movement of the light, you are now in control of what seems to be a great power, imagining with every twist and turn of the pen that you yourself are creating the sun beams brightening up the entire classroom.

Photo Observation #6

My friend took this photo of my sister and I at the Museum of Ice Cream in Soho Manhattan this past January.

 THEME: Advertisement/Desire

DESCRIPTION: This photo perfectly captures the idea of advertisement/desire, as the multiple vibrant neon rings create an enticing tunnel of wonderment and whimsicality. The lighting created in the photo draws the viewer into the world of the Museum of Ice cream, and makes the viewer eager to go explore the tasteful and colorful world that beholds them at the end of the tunnel.

Photo Observation #4

1) 35mm from Summer 2019. Night

2) THEME: Single artificial light source

3) DESCRIPTION: Since the light in the photo comes from a single lamp with red diffusion on it it coats everything in a monochrome glow. It gives a sense of unity to its subjects and also exaggerates its contrast in the places in which the light falls off almost as if it’s a black and white photo. The result is a moody yet timeless photo.

Lighting Observation #4

  1. Time – Date – Location: 10 PM, February, Vermont
  2. I am on a film shoot in Vermont. The Ground is covered with snow. It is dark out. We have a single 5K HMI pointing through the trees at our main character.
  3. The actor is supposed to have his mind slipping from him, he may have Alzheimer’s. The humungous shadows the trees cast from the light on top of this hill give an eerie ambiance to the space as if the space is conscious. In reality it is too bright for a real night time scene but here it works. It seems as if the character is being left behind in time and space as his environment grows and glooms over.
