Light Observation

  1. DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/5/19, the corner by Stuy. Hall, 2:30 am
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A single streetlight on the corner illuminating a small area
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The small area of light was the only one in the area and it seemed as if a movie could be filmed right there, a zoom in on the one circle of light with rain falling around it

Photo Observation

1) Photo taken by me
2) The Forks, Maine, July 30th, 2018 at 8:24 PM
3) Theme: Shadow
4) The sky’s evening colors are mimicked by it’s reflection in the water, silhouettes the trees that border the lake. They are also mirrored in the water drawing attention to the line across the middle of the photo that it creates

Photo Observation #2

  1. Photo taken by me
  2. Florence, Leon Nero on June 24th, 2019 at 6:59pm
  3. Theme: Shadow
  4. I took this photo after leaving the apartment I was staying in to get a good spot for La Festa di San Giovanni. I was excited to see the food trucks preparing for the event, and before crossing the street took this picture to send to my family. I already felt the crowds emerging, as I was previously warned about, but it was nothing to be afraid of in comparison to NYC. This street in particular was important to me because it’s the first place I arrived at when traveling to Florence, being the place I stayed at for a month.

Photo Observation

1) Photo is from https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7848997/Ingenious-hidden-secret-BBCs-billboard-ad-Dracula.html, from BBC

2) THEME: Shadow

3) DESCRIPTION: In a billboard advertisement for Dracula on BBC, there are a bunch of knives placed seemingly haphazardly on a white billboard. However, we know that vampires thrive at night, as does this billboard. When the light hits the knives just right, they cast a shadow that looks like Dracula with his mouth open, ready to feast.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/3/2020 at around 7:45am in my room in Vander Poel, facing East

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky looked like a line of grey clouds, but then it abruptly ended right above the horizon when the sun was rising.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky was a wall of opaque grey clouds, but there was a stark line of demarcation on the horizon where the golden sun was rising over the Nassau Collesium. Despite the light, the clouds remained dominant.

Lighting Observation

  1. Thursday, January 30th, 2020. 7:00 AM. Bedroom.
  2. White morning light shining through a gap in my curtains, throwing two identical rectangles onto the wall above my desk. Though only a crack, it fills the room with a soft illumination that wakes me from my slumber.
  3. I always prefer the window to the alarm clock. It wakes me with all the subtlety and tenderness that an alarm lacks. Born of the horizon, it explores its adolescent hours in the walls and windows of my room. It’s new life wakes me (albeit slowly), encouraging me to begin my day.

Lighting Observation #1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Around 5 Pm in the school of comm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light was coming through a non flat sky light window from the ceiling. The light was morphed because the glass was composed of 8 panels and was angled.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: On my way home from a day of class I noticed on the floor this piece of light that was morphed and felt layered all it once. If you were to squint the shape of the object must have been a heptagon. It was bizarre and inspiring to see light layered on top of each other as if it were paper machete in some arts and crafts project. It made me realize that there are so many ways to combine and morph ordinary objects we recognize into something new. Life offers so many possibilities.

Photo Observation #1

1. I took this photo somewhere in July around sunset at a lake in Pennsylvania.

2.Sunset/Sunrise

3. Although the sun beginning to set can not be seen directly you see the effect it has on the earth. The shadows the tree’s cast give them a celestial presence as it doubles the amount of vertical and horizontal space they occupy on the screen. You see the cars in the far right glaring and the backs of human heads highlighted in a halo effect. Everything feels more unified and significant at this time of day.

Light Observation #1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: I had my first lighting moment as I was leaving the John Cranford Adams Playhouse after The Magic Flute tech rehearsal on Tuesday, January 28th, walking to my car.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky was completely black aside from a couple stars twinkling along the journey to my car. The street lamp posts were my security for the night to assure I got to my car safely. It was the only light I could see, even though it wasn’t natural light.

3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION- As I trudged out of the playhouse, the only thing on my mind was getting to my car without being bothered or spoken to. After a long day, the only thing I wanted to do was drive home, shower and go to sleep. My silence is temporarily broken as I look up hearing the static from the street lamp. The light illuminated the pavement as my feet beat down on it, increasing my speed to my car. The street lights lit up my path to my car and I left to return home to my maximum comfort.
