Photo Observation: St. Patrick’s Day

ATTRIBUTES: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/st-patricks-day

THEME: St. Patrick’s Day

DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because I thought the light illuminating the other greenery in the background of the photo was magical and beautiful. Because of the combination of backlighting and ambient lighting, the edges of the four leave clover in the foreground glow, making visible the details of the plant and adding to the experience for the viewer.

ATTRIBUTES: This is a McDonald’s Cheeseburger ad I found on a New York Post article about McDonald’s.

THEME: Advertisement/Desire

DESCRIPTION: I chose this image for two reasons. First, I thought the lighting almost intensifies the cheeseburger, making it much more appetizing to the viewer. The moisture of the meat and the ketchup shines in the light, adding dimension to the cheeseburger and making it look much more real (a quality I imagine fast food restaurants always wish to convey). The bun is perfectly round and plump, creating the ideal image of a cheeseburger, and its curves are highlighted by the sidelight shining on the burger. The second reason I chose this image is that I love McDonald’s cheeseburgers, and I think this image looks extremely tasty.

Lighting Observation #7

Date/Time/Location: 4/1/22, Hempstead Turnpike, 9:30pm

Objective Description: As I walked back to my dorm in the cold, a flickering streetlamp shone a warm, perfect circle on the sidewalk below.

Subjective Description: The dark sky made for a shadowy, mostly unseen walk home, eerie and frightening. Very few lights shone in the darkness, except for one by the crosswalk to the Netherlands across the Turnpike. Its beam shone straight down, casting a perfectly circular pool of light on the sidewalk below, which I promptly used as a spotlight (just for kicks). Though I was frightened walking home alone, the streetlight guided me out of the darkness, metaphorically and literally.

Lighting Observation #6

Date/Time/Location: 3/17/22, Emily Lowe 216, 10:30pm

Objective Description: Though the room was dim, the light from my computer screen illuminated my watercolors in a rectangle of cool white light.

Subjective Description: As I painstakingly painted the night away, mixing muddy shades of brown and green, my workspace was lit only by the light shining from my computer screen. Bright white and cool, the paintings took on new energy, almost coming to life under the artificial sun. My surroundings were dark; the only other light I could see was a warm streetlamp through the window in the distance, a reminder of the long trek in the cold ahead of me. Even so, I powered through, encouraged by the ever-glowing luminescence of my Mac screen.

Lighting Observation #5

Date/Time/Location: 3/10/22, The French Workshop in Garden City, 1:30 pm

Objective Description: The sunlight shone through the window in beams, turning the vines on the wall all different shades of green and creating a magical Parisian atmosphere.

Subjective Description: Energy coursed through my veins as my body soaked up the combination of the caffeine and the sunlight shining through the window. Surrounded by faux foliage on all sides, I took in the different shades of green radiating from the vines on the wall, illuminated by the sun’s warm orange rays. Dust particles danced through the air in the beams, celebrating the coming spring. I felt hopeful, ready for new growth, and driven by the sun’s rejuvenating powers.

Lighting Observation #7

  1. Wednesday, March 29th, around 7:00pm. In my dorm.
  2. The setting Sun was coming through my window and hitting my roommate’s fish tank causing a tiny square of rainbow to hit certain spots of the room.
  3. I’ve always enjoyed seeing spots of rainbow due to how the Sun hits specific objects. The fish tank is fairly new, so previous sunsets never caused random rainbows to show up in my room. The placement of the fish tank was at an angle, so there was one rainbow on my side of the room and one on my roommate’s. This provided a nice balance, especially as the Sun continued to set and the rainbows moved across my room. It provided a nice calming or relaxing mood and a nice little sparkle of vibrance to a bland dorm room.

Lighting Observation #7

  1. DATE: 04/01/2022
  2. TIME: 7:25 AM
  3. LOCATION: 5th Floor of Constitution
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The hallway outside the elevator was being lit by the light of the sun shining in through the window of the common room. The light was a warm amber which reflected off of the white walls to create a warm glow throughout the hallway.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The warm light shining in to the hallway created a very comforting feeling as I was walking to the elevator. The otherwise plain white concrete walls where lit up with the yellow light from the sun, which made the otherwise very unwelcoming hallway seem like a safe and happy place. The blue carpet also seemed to look brighter and more inviting as it reflected the light from the sun as well.

Lighting Observation #7

DATE – TIME – LOCATION: 3/31/22, 7:00 PM (ish), Brooks Atkinson Theater

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Spotlights illuminated the actresses.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light pierced through the air all the way from the back of the house to the actresses on stage at SIX. The sharp white lines trapped the actresses in a prison of light.

Photo Observation

Attributes: Google Search

Theme: Advertisement/Desire

Description: I chose this picture for two reasons. One was because I thought it was interesting and effective how bright the lights were against the dark night background as I feel that helped the advertisement even more. The other reason I chose it was because I thought it was interesting that based on where the lights were placed, the angles, and the strength of the beams, a slight hourglass effect takes place as it is brighter right where the lights are but it fades towards the center and the edges. I chose to exaggerate that effect in my lighting design.

Advertisement/Desire Picture

  1. Gummy Bear ad found through Google.
  2. Theme: Advertisement/Desire
  3. I chose this ad because I found that the way the light is hitting the gummy bear and causing it to have that type of shadow makes the ad more desirable. The shadows help to fill in the negative space so the bears are all fitting into a line. I also found that because of the light, the middle gummy bear has a slight sparkle to it, which helps to illicit desire and make you want to consume the product.
